It was my first time at Mehrangarh, a December morning, and I was completely absorbed by the scale of the place. I almost missed these arches entirely, they were behind me.
A small commotion made me turn. And when I did, I couldn't put my camera down.
The sun was falling on everything else. These arches, facing away from it, stood quietly in the shade while visitors walked past without a second glance. There was something about them the intricate carvings, the city of Jodhpur framed beneath them, all of it waiting without any urgency to be seen. I felt I owed them a moment.
Black and white felt like the only honest choice. Not for drama, but because colour would have been a distraction. What I wanted to keep was the feeling, that these arches had been beautiful for centuries, with or without anyone noticing.
This photograph exists in an edition of 15. Not because editions are expected, but because some moments deserve to live in only a few rooms.
